Kleingärten (allotment gardens) are a deeply rooted part of German culture, with around 900,000 plots used by about 5 million people.

In the 19th century, many gardens were created to fight poverty and hunger, while in cities like Berlin, some even became makeshift living spaces. They were especially vital during wars and economic crises, when they helped supply food.

The first official Kleingartenverein dates back to 1814, and by the early 20th century, national organizations formed to secure rights for gardeners.

Today, Kleingärten serve mainly as places for recreation, community, and sustainable gardening. They remain highly popular, with strong demand and sometimes long waiting lists.
